ARS CONCERT SEASON 2018-2019
Please join the Arizona Repertory Singers as we proudly celebrate our 2018-2019 Concert Season. Hailed by audiences throughout Southern Arizona for its blend, technical precision, and vocal artistry, ARS is a rigorously auditioned and trained community of volunteer singers that has been a Tucson treasure for 34 years. We share the belief that there is nothing more transformative than the human voice lifted in song.
The new season under the direction of our highly accomplished Music Director, Dr. Elliot Jones, promises to continue our trademark mix of musical tradition and innovation. In December we will present Carols of Triumphant Joy!, with music for choir and guitar from the Spanish Baroque by Juan de Araujo and brand-new choral music by Thomas Juneau, and Jonathan Dove. We will also perform audience favorites like “Lo, how a rose e’er blooming” and John Rutter’s “What sweeter music.”
In April we will present A New Heaven. This eclectic program includes the most sublime music for choir and organ, and for choir alone, by Edgar Bainton, Herbert Howells, and John Ireland. Of special importance is the Tucson premiere of “The fruit of silence” by Peteris Vasks, based on a text by Mother Theresa.
Our 2018-2019 Concert Season concludes with a performance of Psalms of David and Songs of Solomon at Temple Emanu-el. This program will present psalm settings by C. V. Stanford, Arthur Honegger, and James Macmillan, as well as music reflecting the “Song of Songs” by John Dunstable and Edward Bairstow. We will be performing “Make peace,” a new work by David Lang, as well as “Purer than purest pure,” a setting by University of Arizona composer Daniel Asia of poetry by e e cummings.
The ARS mission continues to expand under the musical direction of Dr. Elliot Jones. He envisions a future for ARS that features an even greater commitment to the choral culture of our community with more… singers, venues, ambitious performances with local arts organizations and more outreach to those who have yet to experience the joy of live choral music.
Ticket sales fund only a small portion of our vision to present quality choral music, or choral works with orchestra and soloists, which enhances our diverse cultural heritage in Tucson. Become a valued partner by contributing to the mission, and future success of ARS. Your generosity will complete the vision.
